When it comes time to make a change, we are often faced with the insurmountable task of wading though years of accumulated items in our homes. We almost always have items we no longer want or need, and are forced to make decisions about what to do with them. It's easy to take out the trash, but what about used items that still have life left, or those that could be repaired/repurposed? It seems wasteful to pay to dispose of usable household items and furniture, but in searching for a solution, we often find that is the only feasible option. 

 

Many start off the downsizing process by attempting to sell unwanted items themselves - but quickly realize that is a full time job! After a few yard sales and weeks spent trying to navigate online resale sites filled with scammers and time wasters, we realize it’s just not worth the trouble, and start considering alternatives.

 

Hoping our unwanted items could be useful to someone in need, we may attempt to donate them to a nonprofit or local thrift shop, only to find they are unable to accept them. The reality is, many larger nonprofit organizations are (understandably) very restrictive with what they will accept. Tight budgets, a lack of space, and minimal manpower means these organizations cannot always bring in bulky items like furniture or appliances. Many will not resell “imperfect" donation items, meaning anything with visible cosmetic wear is turned away, even if it’s completely functional. 

 

In a last ditch effort to avoid the landfill, we might try offering the items for free on a local community page, but that means giving out our location and potentially having dozens of strangers in and out of our homes (assuming they even show up as promised!). At the end of the day we likely still have things leftover, and out of time and options, are forced to pay a bulk trash disposal service to come and take them away.
